Why were old subway cars dropped into the ocean? ๐๐
At the end of their life, subway cars are usually scrapped. But New York City had a different idea.
Instead of junkyards, 2,500 retired subway cars were cleaned, stripped of pollutants, and dropped into the Atlantic to create artificial reefs.
Hereโs why it actually works:
๐ Coral & marine plants latch onto the hard surfaces.
๐ฆช Invertebrates like mussels settle in, attracting more fish.
๐ These reefs provide 400x more food than a bare ocean floor.
Over time, these quiet seabeds become thriving marine neighborhoods. Even as the metal rusts away, the coral remainsโkickstarting entire ecosystems.
