Why were old subway cars dropped into the ocean? ๐Ÿš‡๐ŸŒŠ

At the end of their life, subway cars are usually scrapped. But New York City had a different idea.

Instead of junkyards, 2,500 retired subway cars were cleaned, stripped of pollutants, and dropped into the Atlantic to create artificial reefs.

Hereโ€™s why it actually works:
๐Ÿ  Coral & marine plants latch onto the hard surfaces.
๐Ÿฆช Invertebrates like mussels settle in, attracting more fish.
๐ŸŒŠ These reefs provide 400x more food than a bare ocean floor.

Over time, these quiet seabeds become thriving marine neighborhoods. Even as the metal rusts away, the coral remainsโ€”kickstarting entire ecosystems.
